Nancy is a riverside city located in the Grand Est region of northeastern France, known for its Baroque-style sites such as Place Stanislas, a square belonging to a classical urban ensemble and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Designed by Stanislas Leszczyński, Duke of Lorraine, it was built between 1751 and 1755 under the direction of architect Emmanuel Héré. Its name and central statue have evolved over the course of the upheavals in French history; it has borne its current name since 1831. The Lonely Planet guide lists Place Stanislas as the 4th most beautiful square in the world.

Familiarly called by apocope "Place Stan", it is, despite its beautiful proportions (106 meters by 124 meters), of modest size compared to the 12 hectares of the French record of the Place des Quinconces in Bordeaux; in Nancy itself, the Place de la Carrière or the Cours Léopold, in particular, are larger. It is therefore not its dimensions that make the originality of the Place Stanislas but its layout and its role in the urban planning of the city, linking two formerly independent districts. The architecture and monuments are more typical of a capital of the Ancien Régime than of a simple provincial city. Thus the urban planning of great architectural coherence affirms, during its construction, the persistence of the power of the Duke of Lorraine, who then benefits from his independence.

The square was voted the French people's favorite monument in the 2021 edition of the show "Le Monument favoris des Français" (The French People's Favorite Monument), presented by Stéphane Bern.
