A pin-up is a depiction of a woman, drawn or photographed, in a seductive or "sexy" pose, hence the English expression "pin-up girl" which could be translated into French as "young woman pinned to the wall". The word was first used in 1941.

It was only in the early 1940s that the word pin-up was used to describe these representations hanging on walls.
During the Second World War, pin-ups enjoyed widespread success, not only among the general public, but especially among the military, particularly GIs. The expansion of the production of images related to pin-ups, "brave, exciting, healthy girls" with blond hair, was closely linked to military entertainment at the time. Representations of pin-ups were common in their kit, and some pilots even had the front of their planes painted with their likeness; this was known as nose art. Many of these drawings and photos came from the weekly magazine Yank, the Army Weekly. Their success continued to grow, and during the 1950s, the golden age of pin-ups began, mainly in the United States. Gil Elvgren, an iconic illustrator of this period, was notably notable. During this period, they appeared in magazines, newspapers, posters, calendars, and "art cards," small collectible vignettes that contributed to their popularization. Pin-ups are also popular with truckers, who affix their images in cut-outs to the grilles of their vehicles. Many of these images are currently sought after by collectors.

At the beginning of her career, Marilyn Monroe, a pin-up popular with the military, explained in an interview that she was spotted by Darryl F. Zanuck for Niagara in 1953 thanks to the thousands of letters sent by GIs who, having seen her in a calendar where she posed nude, requested her in a film9.
