The three islands
Extension of the Maures massif into the sea
Off the coast of the commune of Hyères, three islands stretch a short distance from the mainland: Port-Cros, Porquerolles, and Le Levant. Once, along with Corsica and Sardinia, they were connected to the Massif des Maures, a remnant of the ancient Hercynian chain that faces them today.
Port-Cros, Porquerolles, and Levant make up the archipelago of the Golden Islands. Geologically attached to the Maures massif, it was isolated from it by the gradual rise in sea level after the melting of the ice some 20,000 years ago.
Porquerolles, the westernmost, covers an area of 1,257 hectares and forms an arc, oriented east-west, 7 km long and 3 km wide. Five ranges of wooded hills separate cultivated plains that open onto the sea via long beaches of fine sand. The higher southern and eastern coasts are made up of steep cliffs interspersed with a few coves with crystal-clear waters.
Port-Cros, the smallest, has a mountainous terrain entirely covered in dense forest. With an area of 700 hectares, it is massive: 4.5 km by 3.5 km. A few wild valleys, few plains, a more or less steep rocky coast, such is this island which nevertheless offers two large natural bays: the port and Port-man. It is surrounded by islands and islets, including Bagaud located to the west, which is the largest in France!
