The Corniche d'Or, or Estérel Corniche, was inaugurated in 1903 under the impetus of the Touring Club de France. This magnificent road, bordered by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean and the red rocks of the Estérel massif, connects Saint-Raphaël to Cannes.
Although the coastal link between the Var and the Alpes Maritimes was completed in 1903, this route was used by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago, when the path was called the “Via Aurelia”. However, it was quickly abandoned due to barbarian invasions from the North and West.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a new route was created to meet new demands: on the one hand, the advent of tourism, but also the great beginnings of the automobile. The excellent prospects this presented for both departments prompted the Touring Club de France to embark on the enterprise, which was later joined by a large number of local residents.
Success was not long in coming: it was now possible to make the round trip between Cannes and St-Raphaël in a day, while enjoying the splendid landscapes that this route crosses.
Work resumed between the wars, with the aim of rapidly widening the road to accommodate the increase in visitors.
Alas, the Second World War arrived without warning, and the splendid Corniche d'Or became the scene of Italian, German and then Allied military operations during the Provence Landings.
With the conflict finally over, the road was restored. Since then, the Corniche d'Or has remained unchanged, still offering its many twists and turns to the curious who have come to explore this superb coastline.
