It was in 1933 that a savvy operator named Richard Hollingshead built the first true drive-in theater in Camden, New Jersey . The concept behind the venture was to combine the last two luxuries that a Depression-plagued America could not live without: the automobile and the movies.

The first drive-in cinema in France was opened in 1967 by Roland Lecoq in La Farlède, just outside Toulon, along the N97 . As in the United States, it offered several films per showing.
