Alexis Godillot, an iconic figure in Hyères, combined entrepreneurial genius with political commitment as mayor of Saint-Ouen. A supplier to the armies under Napoleon III, he built his fortune through the strategic acquisition of the Hôtel des Iles d'Or in 1864. While the town was experiencing a promising hotel boom with over 600 rooms between 1850 and 1860, the emergence of competition from Nice precipitated its decline. However, Godillot revitalized Hyères by transforming its gardens and farmland into a villa district, attracting a wealthy clientele, like the architect Pierre Chapoulard and his majestic Moorish creations.
