The History of the City Hall
Origins and Reconstruction
The Town Hall, an iconic architectural monument, has stood at the foot of the Clock Tower since the 14th century. However, it underwent a major reconstruction in two distinct phases between 1655 and 1678. This overhaul was inspired by the elegance and grandeur of Italian palaces, under the direction of the architect Pavillon. He was assisted by two talented sculptors, Rambot and Fossé, who helped enrich the structure with artistic and sculptural details.
Artistic Treasures
Inside, on the first floor, is the Salle des États de Provence, which houses two remarkable series of paintings. The first series features portraits of the Counts of Provence and the Kings of France, offering a visual journey through history and the royal lineage. The second series highlights major historical works, illustrating the significant events that shaped the region and the country.
The Erosion of Time and History
With the passage of time and the upheavals of the French Revolution, the façade of the Hôtel de Ville lost much of its original rich ornamentation. Although these decorative elements have been stripped away, the building retains much of its majesty and continues to tell the story of its glorious past through its imposing structure and artistic interiors.
